SLSA Award and Qualification Training

The Academy of Surf is licensed by the Australian Lifesaving Academy - Queensland and the Australian Lifesaving Academy - NSW to provide Surf Life Saving Australia Award and Qualification training to the community and general public. As well as being highly involved in the training of Club Members and Queensland Surf Club Lifesavers, the Academy also trains and develops these same lifesaving and surf skills and awareness as well as general first aid courses to the general community members not surf club members.

We have two training centres, one in South East Queensland on the Gold Coast and the other in Sydney NSW.

The Courses and Qualifications that the Academy offers to the public, community groups and schools includes

· Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) (equivalent to the Bronze Medallion)

· Surf Recue Certificate Units of Competency

· Surf Survival Certificate

· First Aid

· CPR and Resuscitation Certificate

· Advanced Resuscitation Certificate

· Defibrillation Certificate

· And the Junior Surf Education Awards of Surf Aware, Surf Safe and Surf Smart

These Courses can be either the full course for those that have not received their qualification or update proficiency courses to maintain your qualification.

Queensland Courses and Programs

The theory components of the Courses are primarily based at the Currumbin Vikings Surf Club, on Currumbin Beach. The practical components can be based  on the Currumbin Creek, Currumbin Beach, Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads or at Greenmount Beach, depending on conditions and the content being covered.

NSW Courses and Programs

The NSW courses are primarily based at our Training Centre at Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club. The Theory and land based practical components are completed inside the Surf Club with the water and wet training done straight out the front of the Surf Club at Clovelly Beach

Courses are not restricted in Queensland or NSW to these two training venues. We are able to train personnel in other places. Please contact us if you would like us provide training to a group at another venue

Certificate II In Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) - PUA21004

Bronze Medallion

The Certificate II /Bronze Medallion is the basic qualification for Australian Surf Club Lifesavers. The Bronze Medallion is awarded to Surf Club members but also to Community Members and the general public not a member of a Surf Club where it is the Community Bronze Medallion. The Training and Course is exactly the same.

As can be seen from the Units of Competencies below, it is a very comprehensive Award, covering a huge amount of material including theory components but also a lot of hands on practical work.

The Certificate II is made up of nine Units of Competencies which can be done altogether or individually, making it a very flexible course to undertake.

The nine Units of Competencies are

· PUAOHS001B          Follow defined OHS policies and procedures

· PUASAR012A           Apply surf survival and self survival skills

· PUAEME001B          Provide emergency care

· PUAOPE002A          Operate communications systems and equipment

· PUATEA001A           Work in a team

· PUATEA004B           Work effectively in a public safety organisation

· PUACOM001B          Communicate in the workplace

· PUASAR009A           Participate in an aquatic rescue

The pre-requisites for the SRC are

· Minimum age 15 years old on the day of the assessment

· Complete a 400m Pool swim in under 9 minutes

· Complete a 200m, 200m Surf Swim and 200m Run in under 8 minutes

These courses can be intensive courses or spread out over a number of weeks.

Queensland School Students in Years 10, 11 and 12, after successfully completing the whole Certificate can have 4 Credit points allocated towards their QCE.

This Certificate Course gives participants a range of practical and theoretical knowledge which is extremely valuable for anyone spending time at the beach and in the aquatic arena.

Surf Rescue Certificate Components

Although the Surf Rescue Certificate is, like the Bronze Medallion, a Surf Club Award, community members are still able to complete and undertake the competencies. The Course is made up of three of the nine Certificate II Units of Competencies. Again these can be done altogether or individually. The SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate is equivalent and recognised by the International Life Saving Federation as the ILS Junior Surf Lifesaver Award

The three Units of Competencies are

· PUASAR012A Apply surf survival and self survival skills

· PUAEME001B Provide emergency care

· PUASAR009A Participate in an aquatic rescue

The pre-requisites for the SRC are

· Minimum age 13 years old on the day of the assessment

· Complete a 200m Pool swim in under 5 minutes

· Complete a 100m Run, 100m Surf Swim and 100m Run in under 5 minutes

Once these three have been completed, to finish the complete Certificate II, only the remaining six Units of Competencies need to be completed.

Surf Survival Certificate

2009 sees the introduction of a completely newly revamped Surf Survival Certificate. The Certificate has been totally overhauled to become once again an extremely comprehensive Surf course—perfect for anyone wanting the basics of surf awareness, rescue and survival techniques. It is envisaged that this new Certificate will become the benchmark once again for the School Surfing Programs, and is being strongly supported by Surfing Queensland, the Queensland State Surfing Governing Body.

The Certificate Program includes theoretical and practical components. The topics covered are

· Surf Safety

· Surf Skills and self rescue techniques

· Rescue techniques

· Introduction to surfing first aid

The Assessment includes a Multiple Choice Theory Paper but is mainly based around practical assessments of a Run Swim Run, Signals, DRABCD and completing a Board Rescue .

· Minimum age 12 years old on the day of the assessment

· Complete a 150 metre swim in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres without stopping using either freestyle or breast stroke style.

· Complete a two (2) minute survival float
